About Gel Free SST Ribbon Fiber Cables for Outside Plant Applications
SST-Ribbon Cables are designed primarily for outside plant environments and campus backbone applications. In single-tube ribbon cables, several fibers (typically 12) are fabricated into a ribbon. The fibers are held together in an acrylate matrix, which provides excellent mechanical protection. Ribbons are stacked, and the stack is rotationally stranded into a central buffer tube. This enhances the tensile and bending performance of the cable. Finally, dielectric strength members with waterblocking capability are placed alongside the central buffer tube to provide tensile strength. SST-Ribbon Cables differ from loose tube cables in that ribbon stacks offer exceptional packing density. In higher fiber counts, SST-Ribbon Cables save valuable duct space over loose tube cables. Further, SST Ribbon Cables enable use of Unicam MTP Connectors or mass fusion splicing to terminate several fibers in a single operation, often reducing the overall cost of termination. Gel-free waterblocking materials protect the interstitial areas of the buffer tube against water ingress. These materials incorporate superabsorbent polymers that swell on contact with water to block ingress of moisture. The materials reactivate indefinitely over dry/wet cycles so that cables will remain protected even from undetected holes or tears. Outside plant SST Ribbon Cables are jacketed with an MDPE outer sheath. This material provides excellent flexibility and a low coefficient of friction for easy installation. Additionally, the MDPE sheath contains carbon black to provide superior UV resistance over the life of the cable. Indoor ribbon cables are jacketed with specialty compounds which facilitate compliance to the flame-retardant and smoke-generation requirements of the intended applications.
